Celebrity Edge

First look at Celebrity's 'game-changing' new Edge class

A rooftop garden and a restaurant that travels to different decks are just two of the innovative new features of Celebrity Cruises’ new Edge-class ship.

The line unveiled key aspects of the ship at the first in a series of “reveal” events to showcase Celebrity Edge, which goes on sale at 5pm in the UK on Monday.

Media and trade partners joined the event in Miami, while corresponding events will occur globally.

The new vessel – the first of four ships in the class – will sail for the first time in December 2018. Celebrity Beyond will launch in 2020, followed by further new ships in 2021 and 2022.

Edge will offer two itineraries from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The eastern Caribbean journey will visit San Juan, Puerto Rico; Tortola, British Virgin Islands (a first for Celebrity from South Florida); and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

The western Caribbean voyage will visit Key West, Florida; Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

There will be 1,467 staterooms, double occupancy of 2918; 918 will be Edge Staterooms with Infinite Verandas while 176 will be suites.

Celebrity has described Edge class as “poised to change the way guests experience the world”.

It is the first ship ever to be completely designed in 3D, allowing “every detail to be reviewed, fine-tuned and perfected”. This took place in a new Innovation Lab at the Royal Caribbean Cruises campus in Miami.

Facial recognition software will allow guests to get aboard faster while keyless entry will be possible with a digital key on a smart phone.

A new Virtual Concierge app will use artificial intelligence, allowing guests to order drinks, book dinner reservations, or reserve shore-excursions.

“Edge has a unique, outward-facing design that breaks from traditional ship design,” said the cruise line.

“On Edge guests will feel more connected with the sea and the exciting places they will visit.”

London-based interior designer Kelly Hoppen of Kelly Hoppen Interiors designed a number of aspects of the ship including The Retreat – an ultra-exclusive private space reserved exclusively for Suite-class guests.

"Celebrity Edge is one of the most exciting, innovative and transformational ships I have ever been involved with," said Richard Fain, chairman and chief executive, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “The new features and refined design will establish a new baseline for ships from here on out."

Magic Carpet

Perched on the starboard side of the ship, the Magic Carpet will make Celebrity Edge’s profile recognizable from miles away.

The size of a tennis court, the engineering feat will be the world’s first cantilevered venue that travels 13 stories.
The space will be repositioned alongside several decks and transform into a different venue depending on which deck it’s at.

When situated on the summit of the ship on Deck 16, Magic Carpet will become a specialty restaurant up in the sky where experiences such as “Dinner on the Edge” will be hosted for a select number of guests.

On Deck 14 Magic Carpet will become an extension of the already expansive relaxing main pool area.

On Deck 5 it will extend the ship’s restaurants into al fresco seating for almost 100 guests.

At the bottom, Deck 2, Magic Carpet will hover just above the ocean surface and become an extension of the Destination Gateway, a new area that becomes a luxury embarkation station.

Rooftop Garden

The Rooftop Garden will be a “living, urban playscape” inspired by childhood playgrounds.

It will be tended to daily by a resident horticulturist and feature games and activities throughout the day and the successful A Tast of Film concept at night.

There will also be pop-up live music performances and the Rooftop Garden Grill will offer a selection of burgers, brisket and barbequed food.

The Retreat

The Retreat Sundeck will be a spacious outdoor lounge area, which includes The Retreat Pool and The Retreat Pool Bar.

It will feature a full-sized pool, a hot tub, hanging chairs and shaded resort-style cabanas on the forward end of the ship. The Retreat will offer dedicated pool butlers.

The Retreat Lounge will be open around the clock and has been designed to feel like a sunroom. Guests will have access to their dedicated concierge who’ll make any arrangements they need – both on and off the ship.

They will also enjoy complimentary drinks and gourmet “bites”.

Luminae @ The Retreat will have more than 117 linear feet of floor-to-ceiling windows, offering extensive views. The restaurant and its menus will be exclusive, crafted by Celebrity’s own Michelin-starred chef, Cornelius Gallagher.

Resort Deck

The Resort Deck will include the main pool area, the new Rooftop Garden, the jogging track, and the Solarium.

The space will be encompassed by an outward-facing, asymmetrical terraced pool deck nearly 22 feet high that makes the ocean views and landscapes the focal point.

There will be martini glass-shaped hot tubs suspended in the air on glass stems that bookend the pool and there will be a nearly quarter-mile-long two-deck jogging track.

At one end of the pool will be a large mirror installation designed by Tom Wright. The pool deck will be full of oversized sculptures that light up at night.

Six rentable cabanas will line the starboard side of the deck.

Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda

Hoppen also worked on the new Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda, the Sky Suite, the Penthouse Suite, the Iconic Suite and the Edge Villa.

There will be 918 Infinite Veranda Staterooms of 1,467 total staterooms. The entire living space becomes the veranda here, letting guests walk right out to the water’s edge.

Edge Staterooms will offer technology that allows guests to control everything from lighting, to shades, temperature, and service, including a setting that sees guests able to choose being tucked in and gently woken up in the morning.

They will also be 23% larger than the Celebrity Solstice-class veranda staterooms and have capacity for up to four guests.

The rooms will include a king-sized bed from Celebrity’s new Cashmere Bedding Collection and the new category will feature single rooms.

Sky Suite

The 146 outward-facing Sky Suites (almost triple the amount on Celebrity’s other ships) will give views of the outdoors from anywhere in the stateroom, with a window between the bathroom and living space.

The king-sized bed has also been rotated to face the ocean. The rooms will include a personal butler service and when staying in the Sky Suite, guests will also enjoy access to The Retreat (for Suite Guests), including the private restaurant Luminae @ The Retreat, The Retreat Lounge, and The Retreat Sundeck, including The Retreat Pool and The Retreat Pool Bar.

Penthouse Suite

There will also be two “freshly reimagined and redesigned” two-bedroom, two-bathroom Penthouse Suites with dual walk-through showers, walk-in closets and soaking tubs on the veranda. These guests will also have access to the butler service and The Retreat. They can sleep up to six guests.

Iconic Suite

There will be two new Edge-exclusive Iconic Suites, will be the “highest level” onboard. At more than 2,500 sq ft they will be situated above the bridge of the ship.

A total of 82 linear feet of panoramic glass will surround the entire dining room, living room and bedroom. The veranda will also sit above the wing of the bridge, with a hot tub, a shaded private, resort-style cabana, and views of the ocean.

There will also be an in-suite butler’s pantry and guests will have access to The Retreat.

Edge Villa

The six Edge Villas will be another new category of suite, on two levels. They will feature outward-facing views, private plunge pools and direct walk-out access to The Retreat Sundeck.

Guests staying in an Edge Villa will also enjoy personal butler service and access to The Retreat.
